Railroad Medicare Claims

By: TechComm Services Manager

When determining if a provider is eligible for an electronic claim filing exception for Medicare Railroad claims, Medicare will consider the total number of claims submitted to both Railroad and non-Railroad Medicare contractors, effective January 7, 2008. The exception previously permitted providers who submitted fewer than 10 claims per month (120 claims per year) to a Railroad Medicare Carrier to send paper claims.

With the implementation of CR 5606 on January 8, the Administrative Simplification Compliance Act Enforcement Review decisions made by non-Raliroad Medicare contractors will be applied to the same providers when they bill a Railroad Medicare Carrier. This includes the determination of whether providers are ineligible to submit paper claims. The effect will be that any providers who must submit non-Railroad claims electronically because they submit over 10 claims per month will be required to send electronic Railroad claims.
