CMS Confirms Effective Dates for ICD-10 Codes and 5010 Transactions

By: Candace Wintering, Manager, Technical Communication

CMS confirmed that the effective dates in the final rules for ICD-10 code sets and 5010 transaction standards (published in January) will not be extended.

The ICD-10 rule finalizes new code sets to be used for reporting diagnoses and procedures on healthcare transactions. The ICD-10 code sets are greatly expanded and more precise than the ICD-9 sets. The rules requires compliance by Oct. 1, 2013 for the ICD-10 code set.

The other final rule adopts the updated version 5010 of the standards governing electronic transactions under HIPAA. The compliance date for transactions is Jan. 1, 2012. Small health plans have an additional year and must comply on Jan. 1, 2013.  The version 5010 standards are necessary to use the ICD-10 codes.
