The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a requirement of HIPAA, and the NPI will replace the Unique Physician Identification Numbers (UPINs) and other existing legacy identifiers. However, under the Medicare FFS contingency plan, UPINs and surrogate UPINs may still be used to identify ordering and referring providers and suppliers until May 23, 2008, at which time NPIs will become mandatory.

CMS discontinued assigning UPINs on June 29, 2007 but will maintain its UPIN public “look-up” functionality and Registry Web site through May 23, 2008. Further information on this topic is available in CR5584 on the CMS Web site.
