Transition to ICD-10

By: David Belcastro, Technical Support Consultant

Author's pictureAs Quadax begins our transition toward ICD-10-CM/PCS (ICD-10), we are looking at all of the factors that are affected by and will affect the transition to the new coding format. One of the first steps intended to facilitate the change to ICD-10 is the implementation of the ANSI 5010 format. This new electronic claim format is one of the necessary components in the transition to ICD-10, as, unlike the ANSI 4010 format, ANSI 5010 can handle the more detailed ICD-10 codes. The implementation deadline for the ANSI 5010 format is January 2012, and the implementation deadline for ICD-10 is in October 2013, 22 months later.

Quadax has already begun to receive inquiries as to when we will start to accept some of the changes that come with the ICD-10 transition, but are facilitated by the ANSI 5010 transition. One such change is the ability to include up to 24 diagnosis codes on institutional claims and 12 on professional claims. Therefore, the implementation teams for both of these projects are working closely together. The dynamic between the two implementation projects will influence the implementation of ICD-10 and is just one of the many components that Quadax will look to confront in the coming months.

Keep an eye out in future newsletters for more information on our transition to ICD-10.
