Medicare Crossover Claims Not Transmitted

By: Candace Wintering, Manager, Technical Communications

Medicare contractors Palmetto GBA and National Government Services have both issued notices concerning some Medicare crossover claims not being transmitted to the secondary payers. The problem possibly began as early as January 1, 2010. To determine if your claims were not transmitted, CMS recommends the following:

  • Examine your Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) or standard paper remittance advice. Remittance Remark Code MA 18 indicates that a claim was transmitted to the supplemental insurer.
  • If you identify claims that did not cross over, you can submit claims to the supplemental insurer by normal acceptable methods.

The Coordination of Benefits (COB) contractor who is responsible for transmitting Medicare crossover claims is aware of the problem and is taking steps to resolve the issue.
