HHS Requests Industry Input on PHI Disclosures
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) as it readies a rule to address the accounting of disclosures of protected health information (PHI). HITECH amends the HIPAA privacy rule to require covered entities to account for disclosures of PHI to carry out treatment, payment, and health care operations if such disclosures are through an electronic health record. The RFI includes nine questions for which HHS wants health care industry input. Comments are due by May 18, 2010.
